Here are 7 recommendations and tips on how to protect yourself from web fraudsters when you go on vacation.

Consider this article as a guide to strengthening your protection, making your life easier, avoiding attacks, and reducing risks for your business or SMB. The answer lies in rigorous management, effective communication, and continuous training. Current technological development makes these steps crucial.

1. Limit Information Shared on Social Media and the Internet

Planning a trip to France this year to visit our French cousins? Going away for a weekend at the cottage? Going to explore the world?

Avoid making it a public announcement, talking about it on social media or on the Internet. Stay discreet to avoid exposing yourself and your business.

Think of social media and the Internet as a large public square. Announcing your vacation is like shouting to everyone that your house is empty. Keep your plans to yourself and avoid offering a golden opportunity to fraudsters.

In managing your company's communication, prioritize discretion. How? By limiting the sensitive information shared on the network.

2. Unplug Your Router

Your router is the beating heart of your online communication. Since you're away, there's no reason to leave it on.

Your router is like an open window to the world. In your absence, close it. This will reduce the risk of intrusion and, as a bonus, your electricity bill. Also turn it off to preserve the IT health of your organization.

3. Make One (or Several!) Backup of Your Physical Data and Cloud Solutions

Before leaving your workplace, how can you guarantee the security of your data?

Take the opportunity to make a new backup of your work data (on mobile too!). Don't forget data you may have on Cloud solutions.

It might also be time to install those software updates that have been waiting for a few days. By the way, it's not something you only do once a year, right! This is a crucial step for your company's digital health.

It's like checking the oil in your car before a long trip, except we're talking about your business.

4. Take Advantage of Your Vacation for a Digital Spring Cleaning

Cybersecurity also involves rigorous access management.

Vacations are the ideal time for management: sorting, organizing, securing. It's a bit like spring cleaning, but a web version for your data.

Have you been wanting to list your online accounts for a while? The idea of cleaning up your passwords has been on your mind for some time? You've never had time to activate the famous two-factor authentication? Would sorting through your inbox be beneficial for your mental health? Quite the job, almost a profession in itself! But a perfect project for the holidays!

This is the ideal opportunity to do it. And that's also what fraud prevention is about! It's an essential step toward better cybersecurity.

5. Avoid Free Wi-Fi

The temptation to connect to free Wi-Fi is great. However, when facing these networks, caution is needed to guarantee the security of your business on the Internet.

Free Wi-Fi can look like oases in the digital desert. But beware, they are often mirages.

Universal cyber law: Avoid connecting to free and public Wi-Fi as much as possible. It's not a known and secure connection. Especially if it's to visit websites like your bank, or your favorite social networks.

Alternatively, choose a VPN provider before you leave.

6. Plan for Loss and Theft of Your Devices

Despite the fact that losing or having a device stolen is never in our plans, it happens... And it's often a crisis situation that must be dealt with. How? Don't forget to note down the serial numbers of your devices. Also make sure your devices lock automatically after a certain time and are protected by a password. And finally, activate geolocation on your devices and plan for remote data wipe solutions.
